Many people concern about Cuban food. I think it is a matter of budget, knowing your preferences and making a good restaurant choice

Like anywhere else, you can find good and not so good places to eat in Cuba.

If you are not a fussy eater, try some delicious Cuba food recipes. Ask a Cuban what typical Cuba food is. “congri, roast pork, yucca and salad,” they will tell you. However, Cuban food is much more than that.

Paella, Lobster, Casserole Tamale, Shrimp Tomato Sauce, Yellow Rice, Imperial Rice, black beans, and many other delicious dishes are among the most popular recipes from Cuba.

There is a strong Spanish and African influence, in Cuba cuisine. Spaniards introduced poultry, cattle, pigs and horses. Pork became Cubans’ favourite in a few years.

Okra, yams, malangas, different kinds of bananas and plantains were brought to Cuba from Africa.  Many dishes that are still popular in Cuba, especially tostones, one of my favourites, and fufú were also brought from Africa.

Aboriginal cuisine is also present in Cuban kitchen. Part of these aboriginal eating traditions is the cassava bread and the “ajiaco”.

It was in Cuba where Columbus first tried cassava, corn, sweet potatoes, peanuts, pumpkins, peppers and it was there where he heard about many delicious tropical fruits:

pineapples, mammees, anonas, guavas, custard apples, soursops and star apples.

Fill a large skillet with oil, approximately a third full, and heat over medium-high heat.

Fry the plantain slices long enough to make them soft, about 3 to 5 minutes. Remove the plantains and drain them.

You can use paper towels. Smash the plantains to about half their thickness using a plantain press or just a brown paper bag folded over.

If you prefer them to be crunchy outside and soft inside soak them for a few minutes in some water with salt.

Cubans like fried food. I guess it is part, not only of African traditions, but also of the influence of those Spaniards who came to Cuba from the South of the Peninsula, mainly Andalusia.

Africans also introduced in the country the custom of eating rice with any other food and it was reinforced by Spaniards who came from Catalonia.

Today, many Cuba food recipes include a mix of tomato sauce with onion, garlic and just a few sautéed spices because Cubans don’t like dry meals.
