I travel to Varadero almost every year. It is one of my favourite top Cuba holiday destinations. For me, apart from Varaderos incredible clear shallow waters, its fine white sand and incredible blue shades, the fact that you can walk for hours along this 20 kilometer beach shore that stretches out to the ocean is just amazing. It feels as if this beach had no end and it makes it unique. When you travel to Varadero for your Cuba holidays you will realize that in Varadero you can find not just the beach, but all you might have dreamed of for your Cuba beach holidays: the Varadero beach is just spectacular, the perfect scenery for a movie; a great variety of water sport and night life entertainment options. Whether you are interested in diving, dancing, fishing, exploring caves or just relaxing, Varadero Cuba is the perfect place for you.
On the other hand, having a beach like that just 140 km away from Havana city, about 4 hours drive, is more than enough to consider it my favorite. Combining a relaxing Varadero Vacations at Varadero beach with an exciting escape to Havana city is my idea of a perfect vacation when you plan to travel to Cuba on your holidays. Some people claim that you dont know the real Cuba when you travel to Varadero. I dont really agree with that. What do they mean by the real Cuba? If they just refer to experiencing Cuban culture and being in contact with Cuban people, then, I have to tell you that Varadero beach is plenty of Cubans. Just keep in mind that Cubans generally go to the beach from May to August. If you go to Varadero Cuba or any other Cuban beach on these months, you will have the chance to meet lots of Cubans. People from Havana love Varadero Beach and it is only 2 hour drive from the capital city, so you can find many people from Havana and other neighbour cities in Varadero during the summer also enjoying their Varadero Vacations . Cuban summer, I mean.
When I travelled to Cuba for the first time, I was told that originally, in the 16th century, Varadero Cuba was just a salt supplier for the Spanish ships in Latin America. Later, in 1887, when the city was founded, it was conceived as the holiday destination of ten families from Cardenas that were allowed to build there houses to go for vacations. The first hotel in the city, named also Varadero, was built only in 1915. Later, in the 30s an American, called Mr. DuPont, built a residence in Varadero and tourism increased in this area.
My friend Carys mom, who used to live in Cardenas when she was very young, tells me stories about Varadero beach at that time. It was just a few houses and an amazing almost virgin Cuban beach. On weekends she used to go to Varadero beach with her family. They always camped by the beach area near Mr. DuPonts residence. It was amazing, she says. They picked up shells from the sea shore and enjoyed swimming. Varadero water was so clear that they could see their toes. It is still very clear and you can still find shells at Varadero beach.
Cary also remembers Varadero International Song Festival. It was in 1967, I guess, and she says it is the best music festival this generation of Cubans has seen. It was a big show. Famous artists from all over the world came to Varadero Cuba to offer their music and young (and not so young) Cubans from Havana, Matanzas and other surrounding cities came to Varadero to enjoy the music. There are still many cultural and scientific events that take place in Varadero every year.
Today, Varadero has grown and it has changed a lot, but the beach is still excellent. Varadero beach has become one of the top tourist holiday destinations in Cuba. It has no much to do with the Varadero Carys family remember. Though with a different flavour, Varaderos attractions and excellent beach have won world reputation and are now many peoples favourite.
Several comfortable Varadero resorts, designed to please the most demanding guests have been built along the shore. Varadero resorts are now on a par with the most outstanding Caribbean destination resorts. If you add to this Varaderos excellent location, not so far from Havana and other important cities such as Matanzas and Cardenas, near Bellamar Caves, Yumury Valley, you would agree with me that Varadero Cuba is one of the best Cuba beach holiday destinations.
